The first thing you must think of is where does the light come from? In this case, I decide to go for a fairly simple front light and shade accordingly. Once I chose my base tone, it’s time to define the form of the skin. After it’s done, I use a hard edged brush to paint in the red lips. To quickly fill in the canvas with a color, I simply use the Gradient tool. Pick a mid-tone for the skin, one that’s not too saturated or too light (a common mistake many artists make). Getting the lips to look right now just makes the painting process that much easier. I create a new layer, and with a Hard Edged brush, I quickly sketch in the lips. I almost always start off with a sketch for my serious paintings, and this one is no different.
